OEE Calculation — Made Simple for Metalliser Operators
Have you ever heard your manager say "Our OEE is only 60%, we need to improve" and you wondered "What is OEE? How do they calculate it?"
Don't worry. By the end of this blog, you will understand OEE better than most supervisors. And the best part? You only need to know simple division. No big math.
🤔 What Is OEE?
OEE means Overall Equipment Effectiveness. In simple words, it's a report card for your machine. Just like your school report card had marks in 3 subjects, OEE has marks in 3 areas:

- Did the machine run today? (Availability)
- Did it produce full quantity? (Performance)
- Was the film A-Grade? (Quality)
That's it. Three simple questions. Let me show you how to find each answer.
1️⃣ Availability — "Did the Machine Run?"
Story: Your shift is 8 hours = 480 minutes. But the machine was down for 80 minutes (boat change took 60 min, web break 20 min). So machine actually ran for 400 minutes.
👉 Easy way to remember: Just ask "How many minutes did machine run, out of total minutes available?" Divide and multiply by 100. Done.
2️⃣ Performance — "Did It Give Full Output?"
Story: When machine runs at full speed, it should make 25 kg per minute. So in 400 minutes of running, target = 400 × 25 = 10,000 kg. But you actually made only 8,500 kg (because OD adjustment was needed twice and machine ran a bit slow).
👉 Easy way to remember: "How much you made, divided by how much you should have made."

3️⃣ Quality — "Was the Film A-Grade?"
Story: Out of 8,500 kg you made, 8,000 kg was A-Grade and 500 kg was B-Grade or reject (low OD patches at boat-end).
👉 Easy way to remember: "Good film divided by total film."
✨ Now Multiply All Three

📊 What Does Your OEE Score Mean?
| OEE Score | Meaning | Like a Student |
|---|---|---|
| 85%+ | 🏆 World class | First class with distinction |
| 70-85% | ✅ Good | First class |
| 60-70% | ⚠️ Average | Pass class |
| Below 60% | 🚨 Needs work | Fail — must improve |
🔧 Bonus: This Works for ANY Machine
The best part about OEE? You learned it for metalliser, but the same 3 questions work for every machine in your plant:
| Machine | Performance Measure | Quality Measure |
|---|---|---|
| Metalliser | Actual kg ÷ Target kg | A-Grade ÷ Total |
| Laminator | Actual meters ÷ Target meters | Good lamination ÷ Total |
| Slitter | Actual rolls ÷ Target rolls | Good edge rolls ÷ Total |
| Printing Press | Actual prints ÷ Target prints | Good prints ÷ Total |
| Extruder | Actual kg ÷ Target kg | In-spec film ÷ Total |
Same formula. Same 3 questions. Once you understand OEE for one machine, you can calculate it for any machine in your plant.
OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality
• Availability = Run Time ÷ Planned Time
• Performance = Actual Output ÷ Target Output (during run time)
• Quality = A-Grade Production ÷ Total Production
💡 Pro tip: For metalliser, use output-based Performance (kg/kg) instead of speed-based (m-min/m-min). It captures slow patches, micro-stops, and OD adjustment losses that speed alone misses.
💡 5 Simple Things You Can Do Tomorrow
- Note down boat change time — every shift, write start and end time. This improves Availability.
- Don't slow down the machine unnecessarily — every slow patch hurts Performance.
- Watch OD carefully near boat end-of-life — change boat before reject starts. This saves Quality.
- Reduce web breaks — proper threading and edge alignment. Saves Availability.
- Keep wire feed steady — no kinks, no jerks. Saves Performance and Quality both.
You don't need to do the math every day. That's the supervisor's job. But if you understand these 3 questions, you become the operator who thinks, not just runs the machine. And that's the operator who gets promoted first.
Every time the machine runs smooth, OEE goes UP. Every time there's a stoppage, slow run, or reject, OEE goes DOWN. Simple.

(Availability)
(Performance)
(Quality)

OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality
• Quality = A-Grade
